February, 2008 — Public Radio International (PRI) and America Abroad Media proudly announce that esteemed journalist Deborah Amos now co-anchors "America Abroad." Amos joins Ray Suarez, one of the nation's most celebrated news anchors. An incisive series on U.S. foreign policy and international affairs, "America Abroad" has been part of the PRI portfolio since 2003, with programs aired and webcast by over 200 PRI affiliate stations nationwide.

The Catholic Church is one of the world’s longest-standing institutions and throughout its history has played a unique role on the global stage. The Church figured prominently in the fall of communism and contributed to solving conflicts across the globe.

The Holy See, the Church’s spiritual and temporal authority, continues to hold sway in world affairs, enjoying a privileged status at the United Nations and other multilateral institutions. While ministering to the more than one billion Catholics worldwide, the Church’s battery of clergy and diplomats also carry on the faith’s tradition of involvement in global matters, from Iraq to Zimbabwe.

Integrating Islam
Subway bombings in Madrid and London, riots in France, and protests over Danish cartoons defaming the Prophet Mohammed have prompted concern about how Muslim immigrants are adjusting to Europe’s liberal and secular society. Across the Atlantic, the situation seems more sanguine. A recent study released by the Pew Research Center found that Muslims in America are largely middle class and have integrated well. But the tensions in Europe have sparked fears that Islamic extremism could spread the US.

On this edition of America Abroad, we examine the friction between Muslim immigrants and European society, and compare that to the situation of Muslims in America.
